15 March 2020: Philippians 1:27 – 2:1-16 (Part 1), Rev. Dr. Garwood
Philippians 1:27-30: “let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ”
SO, St. Paul writes to Christians in Chapter 2:1-2 about living life as a Christian. … “being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.”
Therefore, Chapter 2:3, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
What does it mean to be humble or have humility?
Chapter 2:5, “Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus …”
Having true humility and this other centered attitude and focus is worked in Christians by the Holy Spirit and the Christ in us.
Chapter 2:6, Jesus was “…in the form of God.”
Jesus has two natures, but is one man. (Nicene Creed, Athanasian Creed).
Athanasian Creed:
28 Therefore, it is the right faith that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time both God and man.
29 He is God, begotten from the substance of the Father before all ages; and He is man, born from the substance of His mother in this age:
30 perfect God and perfect man, composed of a rational soul and human flesh;
31 equal to the Father with respect to His divinity, less than the Father with respect to his humanity.
32 Although He is God and man, He is not two, but one Christ:
33 one, however, not by the conversion of the divinity into flesh, but by the assumption of the humanity into God;
34 one altogether, not by confusion of substance but by unity of person.
2 Corinthians 5:21, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
Philippians 2:9-10, “Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
8 March 2020: The Temptations of Jesus
The Sixth Petition
"And lead us not into temptation ..."
What does this mean?
God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory.
On the heel of Jesus multiplying bread "Command these stones to become loaves of bread ..." (Matthew 4:3)
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple (Matthew 4:5)
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." (Matthew 4:8-9)
