Pastor Shawn Kumm hails from a small town in western Iowa, where he grew up with parents, a brother, sister, and a variety of barnyard animals. He is blessed to have attended the Lutheran grade school of Zion Lutheran Church (Denison, IA), Concordia University (St. Paul, MN), and Concordia Seminary (St. Louis, MO). After achieving his goal of making it through seminary as a single man, two days after graduation Pastor Kumm and his wife Barbie were married in a suburb of St. Louis on May 27, 1990.

After six years as a campus pastor to the students of Southern Illinois University (Carbondale, IL), Pastor Kumm served for twenty years as pastor of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Laramie, WY. In the summer of 2016, Pastor Kumm was installed as pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church, Cody, Wyoming.

In addition to preaching, teaching, and caring for his flock, Pastor Kumm has written for various publications, including as one of several authors of Lutheranism 101 (CPH, 2010), and the author of the companion volume Lutheranism 101: The Course (CPH, 2011). In addition, he also appears as a guest speaker on the radio program Thy Strong Word.

Pastor Kumm has served in various ways, including chairman of both the Board of Directors of the Wyoming District and the Board of Regents of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis. In 2010, he served as guest chaplain to the United States House of Representatives.

Along with two other LCMS pastors, Pastor Kumm has thus far made five trips to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Liberia, West Africa. For two weeks each time, the three LCMS pastors encourage and teach over twenty Liberian Lutheran pastors in the areas of Scripture, theology, worship, pastoral care, and church history.

Pastor Kumm and his wife Barbie are looking forward to celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary. They have been blessed with three children—Alexandra, Emma, and Nickoli. In his spare time, in addition to hiking, reading murder mysteries, and a game of Scrabble, Pastor Kumm enjoys snowshoeing, an activity which has been expressed by placing second in his age group in two different snowshoe races and also coming in second in a snowshoe writing contest. All of which reminds him of the important ordering and center of the Christian’s life:

“Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8).
